Cobbler Square – Apartment complex with Retail
The Cobbler Square complex, in the Old Town neighborhood of Chicago, occupies a full city block of buildings that were compiled over sixty years by the Dr. Scholl company for both their corporate offices and manufacturing. The entire block was redeveloped to become 300 loft type apartments and over 60,000 s.f. of retail space. The buildings containing the apartments are organized around interior courtyards, with circulation around the complex taking place in external walkways clearly delineated from the faces of the old brick buildings.

Inner Atrium – Once past the covered atrium the entry continues into a four storey lobby.
Outer Atrium – The residential entry to the complex is through an open air atrium covered by a glazed skylight, bringing a covered green courtyard deep into the block.
Aerial view – This view, taken during construction from the east, shows the five storey buildings at the center of the block flanked by three storey buildings at the east and west ends. Also visible are the two brick smokestacks from the two boiler houses that were retained for their visual character.
North Courtyard - The north interior courtyard displays the new walkways overlayed onto the old brick elevations which contain corridors allowing residents to move from one building to another. This courtyard contains the remnant of one of the two original boiler houses with its smokestack. The courtyards contain a mixture of green plantings and hardscape, creating communal gatherings spaces for the residents.
Apartments - The apartments were designed to show off the brick and timber construction of the buildings. All of the apartments are open plan, with bath/kitchen cores and some with sleeping lofts above.
