New house – compact and efficient design
A new house of approximately 3,500 s.f. on a 5 acre rural property in Mountainville, NJ. This home was designed for an elderly client who wanted a smaller, more manageable, yet casually elegant house after living in a large farmhouse on a family farm for fifty years. The design work included custom kitchen design, custom millwork and moldings, and selection of all light fixtures and plumbing fittings.

Foyer – The foyer was treated as its own room, with framed openings on all four sides, framing views into the dining room, the study and the living room. All of the openings have glazed transoms and the center of the space is marked by a Moravian star light fixture.
Dining Room – the framed view into the dining room is on axis with the stone fireplace. A recess into the stone above the mantel contains a portrait of the owner.
Front – The house was designed so that the roof form of the main part of the house somewhat disguises the fact that there is a almost a full second floor. This was done to give the house a smaller character. The volume to the right of the house contains two bedrooms for grandchildren as well as a two car garage. This volume was kept separate from the main house as a way to break down the overall mass and give the home a smaller feel.
Rear – At the rear of the house a roofed porch provides informal dining behind the kitchen and a terrace with sunken hot tub behind the master bedroom.
Kitchen - The spaces of the living room and kitchen flow together through a large framed opening. The kitchen is custom designed with cherry cabinets, with many of the upper cabinet doors having diamond leaded glass doors. The owner had used an Aga range for many years and couldn’t imagine cooking on anything else.
